Sparkling wine from one named site

A single-vineyard sparkling wine comes from one named site; in Champagne only a cadastral lieu-dit or a commune may be named on the label.1 EU law allows a unit smaller than the appellation to be named only if at least 85% of the grapes come from it.2

The EU rule

A geographical unit smaller than the area of the protected designation may be stated only if at least 85% of the grapes come from it (Regulation 2019/33, Article 55).2 See smaller geographical unit.

Champagne

Chapter XII of the AOC Champagne specification allows only a cadastral lieu-dit or a commune to be named on the label. Outside the listed communes, the commune name must be paired with "Vigne de" or "Vignoble de" (see vigne de).1 The Union des Maisons de Champagne lists the village or commune name and a single-vineyard designation among optional label statements.5

No specific rule for the word "clos" was found in the Champagne specification text reviewed.1 On a label, "clos" therefore describes the site as the producer presents it; this page cannot say what extra conditions, if any, apply.

A single-vineyard wine can also be a blanc de blancs or blanc de noirs.7
