History

Joseph Krug founded the house in 1843.1 Before that he worked under Adolphe Jacquesson, according to the Jacquesson house.4 The owner group says six generations of the Krug family have carried on the founder's approach.1 Since 2011 each bottle carries a Krug iD code that links to information on that particular release.1

Vineyards and cellar

The UMC gives 21 ha of own vines in 6 villages.2 The best known plot is the Clos du Mesnil, a walled vineyard of 1.84 ha in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.1 The house harvests and vinifies each plot separately, ferments the base wines in barrels and racks them between December and February.1 Each year about 400 wines are tasted: 250 become wines of the year and 150 are kept as reserve wines.1

Wines

Krug Grande Cuvée is released as a numbered Édition each year. According to the house, each Édition blends wines from more than 10 different years and spends about seven years in the cellar.1 The UMC lists Krug Grande Cuvée, Krug Rosé, Krug Millésime, Krug Clos du Mesnil, Krug Clos d'Ambonnay and Krug Collection.2 See multi-vintage and single-vineyard champagne.
