smaller geographical unit

English · EU labelling term

Under EU rules, a geographical unit smaller than the PDO or PGI may be named on the label if at least 85% of the grapes originate there.1

The rule lets a wine show a village, district or site inside its PDO. Germany applies it to Sekt b.A.: Bereich, Großlage, Gemeinde or Einzellage may be added only with at least 85% of the grapes, excluding dosage, from the named area.2 Appellation rules can be narrower: in Champagne only a cadastral lieu-dit or a commune may appear.3 Italian examples include the Rive of Conegliano Valdobbiadene.
