Pierre Péters
Grower · Le Mesnil-sur-Oger · estate begun 1858
Pierre Péters is a family grower in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, describing itself as "propriétaire récoltant" (owner-grower).1 The estate was begun in 1858 on about 2 ha and now covers just over 19 ha.2,3
History
Gaspar Péters, from Luxembourg, married into a family that owned vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and in 1858 began working about 2 ha. He and his son Louis Joseph sold the whole harvest to négociants.2 In 1929 Camille Péters started selling wine under the Camille Péters name, and in 1930 bought 2.5 ha in Les Chétillons.2 Pierre Péters took over in 1944; the 1944 vintage was released in 1946 under his name.2
François Péters ran the estate from 1967 to 2008 and enlarged it to 17 ha. Rodolphe Péters, an oenologist, joined in 2007 and took over in 2008; the estate says more than 80% of its bottles are now exported.2 In 2019 it moved to new premises and marked its centenary with the Héritage cuvée, a blend of 19 vintages.2
Vineyard
The vineyard covers just over 19 ha, mostly in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant, and is certified HVE.3
Wines
Until 2009, when Rosé for Albane was released, the house had made only blanc de blancs.2 Les Chétillons has been made since 1971 from three old-vine plots, more than 45 years old, vinified separately before blending.3 See single-vineyard and grower champagne.
