NM (négociant manipulant)

French · trading house

NM (négociant manipulant) is the label code for a Champagne house that buys grapes, musts or wines, in addition to any grapes of its own, and makes the wine on its premises.1,2

Who they are

The DGCCRF specifies that an NM carries out at least the final production steps on its own premises.1,3 Most Champagne houses (maisons) are NM; the Union des Maisons de Champagne counts at least 200, mostly in Reims and Épernay.2 Compare RM, a grower using only its own harvest, and ND, which buys finished bottles.

Where the code appears

The two letters precede the digits of the Comité Champagne registration number printed on every Champagne label.2,4 The other codes are listed on Champagne label codes.
