ND (négociant distributeur)

French · distributor

ND (négociant distributeur) is the label code for a business that buys finished bottles of Champagne and labels them on its own premises.1,2

Context

An ND does not make the wine. It differs from an NM, which buys grapes, musts or wines and makes Champagne itself.1 It also differs from MA, where finished bottles carry the brand of a buyer such as a retailer or restaurant.1,2 Both NM and ND fall under the wider term négociant.

Where the code appears

The two letters precede the digits of the Comité Champagne registration number printed on every Champagne label.2,3 The other codes are listed on Champagne label codes.
