Perlwein

German · semi-sparkling wine

Perlwein is the German term for semi-sparkling wine; the Weinverordnung also refers to 'Perlwein mit zugesetzter Kohlensäure', Perlwein with added CO2.1,2

Plain Perlwein matches the EU semi-sparkling wine category: 1 to 2.5 bar of the wine's own CO2 at 20 °C and at least 7% vol actual alcohol.2 The version with added CO2 corresponds to aerated semi-sparkling wine.2 With a protected origin, the term becomes Qualitätsperlwein b.A..1,3 Domestic Perlwein may be called Rotling only if made entirely from wine eligible for that name.1 Italian equivalent: frizzante. EU semi-sparkling wine is sold in containers of 60 litres or less.2 See Germany.
