Qualitätsschaumwein
German · quality sparkling wine
Qualitätsschaumwein is German for quality sparkling wine, the term used in the Weinverordnung.1
It matches the EU category quality sparkling wine: at least 3.5 bar at 20 °C and a cuvée of at least 9% vol total alcohol.2 In practice the shorter word Sekt is common, and EU rules allow the category name to be omitted when 'Sekt' is on the label.3 With a protected origin, it becomes Sekt b.A..4 The basic category is Schaumwein, the semi-sparkling one Perlwein. For PDO quality sparkling wines, actual alcohol including the expedition liqueur must be at least 10% vol.5 See Germany.
