Schaumwein
German · sparkling wine
Schaumwein is German for sparkling wine; the Weinverordnung uses it alongside Qualitätsschaumwein.1
It corresponds to the EU category sparkling wine, with at least 3 bar at 20 °C; German labelling guidance gives 3 bar for Schaumwein and 3.5 bar for the Sekt categories.2,3 The quality level is Qualitätsschaumwein or Sekt. Domestic Schaumwein may be called Rotling only if made entirely from wine that may itself bear that name.1 German sparkling wine tax statistics count about 281.5 million litres sold in 2025.4 See Germany and mousseux.
