Clàssic Penedès

DO Penedès sparkling category · traditional or ancestral

Clàssic Penedès is the quality sparkling wine category of DO Penedès in Catalonia.1 Its rules require certified organic grapes, at least 15 months on lees, and both the vintage and the disgorgement date on the label.1

Status

Clàssic Penedès is not a separate DO. It is the term used for quality sparkling wine inside DO Penedès, and its rules are part of the DO Penedès specification.1

This page follows the pliego PDO-ES-A1551-AM06 of December 2020. A further normal amendment was approved on 10 August 2026 (BOE 24 August 2026); its content was not reviewed for this page, so some details may have changed.1,3 The year the category was introduced was not verified.

Method

Two methods are allowed:1

  • the traditional method, with the second fermentation in the bottle and a pressure above 3.5 bar;
  • the ancestral method. Long-ageing ancestral wines with at least 4 years of ageing may be sold undisgorged, labelled "No degollado".

Ageing

The minimum time from tirage to disgorgement is 15 months.1,2 See ageing on lees.

Farming and labelling

Grapes and base wine must come from certified organic farming.1 The vintage and the disgorgement date must both appear on the label.1 See vintage sparkling wine and label codes.
