Gramona

Winery · Sant Sadurní d'Anoia · since 1881

Gramona is a family winery in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia whose roots go back to Celler Batlle, set up by Pau Batlle in 1881.1 It is one of the 24 member wineries of Corpinnat shown on that brand's website.2

History

Gramona traces its history to Josep Batlle, who worked as a winemaker and grower in the Anoia valley in 1850. In 1881 his son Pau set up his own winery, Celler Batlle, and bought the vineyards his father had worked. In the early 20th century the Batlle and Gramona families began producing sparkling wine under the Gramona name.1 In 2021 the family marked a century as sparkling wine makers and 140 years as growers.1

Long ageing

The house's first long-aged sparkling wine, III Lustros, was made in 1951 and released in 1961.1 The wine is a case of long ageing on the lees before disgorgement.

Vineyards

The vineyards lie in the Alt Penedès, about 30 km south of Barcelona, in the basins of the Anoia and Bitlles rivers; the family has worked the Can Romeu estate since the mid-19th century.4,3 Soils are mainly clay and calcareous loam, with alluvium near the Anoia.4 The estate says it farms according to organic and biodynamic principles.3

Corpinnat

Gramona lists its sparkling wines under Corpinnat, a collective brand of Penedès growers; its website shows 24 member wineries, among them Gramona, Recaredo, Llopart and Juvé & Camps.2 The family business is run today by the fifth and sixth generations, led by Jaume, Roc and Leonard Gramona.1
