Cava house · Sant Sadurní d'Anoia · first cava 1872

Codorníu is a family cava house in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, near Barcelona, which the DO Cava regulatory board credits with more than 450 years of history and 18 generations of vine growers.1 According to the same board, Josep Raventós made the first bottle of Cava here in 1872.1

History

The DO Cava regulatory board describes Codorníu as a family company with more than 450 years of history and 18 generations of vine growers.1 The board's winery page states that in 1872 Josep Raventós made the first bottle of Cava by combining the traditional method with Penedès grape varieties.1 The board's general history of the appellation also dates the first traditional-method bottles of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia to 1872, without naming a house.2

Older founding dates are part of the family's own history. Codorníu's website could not be consulted for this page, so only the figures published by DO Cava are given here.

Cellars

The cellars are cited by DO Cava as a key work of Catalan modernism by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. They were declared a National Artistic Historical Monument in 1976.1
