VIVC 9741 · base variety of Prosecco

Glera is the white grape of Prosecco: Prosecco DOC must contain at least 85% Glera, and other listed varieties may make up the remaining 15%.1 The international catalogue VIVC lists it under number 9741, with Prosecco among its synonyms.2

Identity and pedigree

The Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC) lists Glera under number 9741, with white berries and Italy as country of origin.2 It records 25 synonyms; Prosecco, Prosecco Tondo and Prosecco Balbi are among them, together with Glere, Serprina, Prosekar and Beli Teran.2 The pedigree confirmed by DNA markers names one parent, Vulpea; the second parent is unknown.2

Glera Lunga is a different entry: both the Prosecco DOC and the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG rules list it as a separate permitted variety.1,5

Glera is the base variety of the three Prosecco appellations: Prosecco DOC, Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG and Asolo Prosecco DOCG.
