Main rules

Crémant de Luxembourg follows the same broad conditions that the EU sets for the term Crémant in other countries, such as Germany:2,3

  • grapes harvested by hand and selected for Crémant;2
  • for white and rosé, whole-grape pressing with no more than 100 l of must per 150 kg;2
  • second fermentation in the bottle (traditional method);1,2
  • at least 4 atmospheres of pressure at 20 °C;2
  • total SO2 up to 150 mg/l and sugar below 50 g/l.2

The minimum time on the lees is not stated in the specification texts opened for this page (the 2020 cahier des charges and the UK register entry).

Protection abroad

The name has been registered in the UK geographical indication scheme since 10 March 2021, with the 1991 regulation cited as its legal basis.2 Full rules are on the Crémant de Luxembourg page.

Same term, other countries

In Germany the term Crémant may be used for a white or rosé Sekt b.A. under the same EU conditions, including nine months on the lees.3 In Austria, by contrast, "Crémant" may not be used on Sekt g.U.4
