tulip glass (verre à Champagne classique)
French · classic Champagne glass
The tulip glass (verre à Champagne classique) has an egg-shaped bowl narrowing at the top on a long stem; in use since about 1930, it is now regarded as the standard, with a maximum capacity of 22.5 cl according to the Union des Maisons de Champagne.1
Other shapes
UMC compares it with the flute, which shows the wine's appearance but is fragile, and the coupe, where the bouquet escapes and the mousse does not develop.1 The ISO tasting glass is a small tulip on a short stem used mainly by professionals.1
Bubbles form at nucleation sites in the glass, micro-cavities or particles such as dust or fibres.2 See glasses and glass shape.
UMC advises pouring directly above the glass so a cordon of bubbles forms and foaming is limited.3
