pomponne

French · glass type

A pomponne is a flute with a ring or ball at the base instead of a stem.1

Context

The Union des Maisons de Champagne lists the pomponne among Champagne glasses alongside the flute, the coupe, the tulip and the ISO tasting glass.1 Like the flute, its bowl is tall and tapering, a shape UMC credits with showing the wine's appearance.1

UMC regards the tulip glass, egg-shaped and narrowing at the top on a long stem, as today's standard.1 Comparisons of shapes: glasses and glass shape.

Bubbles form at nucleation sites, micro-cavities in the glass or particles such as dust or fibres; without them there is no effervescence.2
