spumante

Italian · sparkling wine

Spumante is Italian for sparkling wine; it appears in names such as Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Spumante Superiore and Asti spumante.1,2

The word says nothing about method. Asti spumante is made by the autoclave (Martinotti) method with at least one month of production, while an Asti spumante metodo classico type needs bottle fermentation and at least nine months on lees.2 In Conegliano Valdobbiadene the spumante type is labelled Superiore.1 Franciacorta goes the other way: the terms 'metodo classico' and 'vino spumante' may not appear on its label.3 The semi-sparkling counterpart is frizzante.
