vigneron

French · vine grower

A vigneron is a vine grower; the Union des Maisons de Champagne counts 16,086 grower-operators in Champagne.1

Growers and labels

Only some growers make and sell their own wine. UMC counts more than 2,000 RM (growers making wine from their own harvest) and about 3,000 RC (growers selling wine made by their cooperative).2 On labels, a grower business is marked by the word récoltant.3

The vineyards are spread over 319 crus (villages).1 See Champagne and grower Champagne.

The AOC Champagne specification requires the registration identifiers set by the Comité Champagne on every label, but does not list the codes itself.4
