Transvasage
French · transfer under pressure
Transvasage is, in the OIV definition, the isobaric transfer of sparkling wine from one container to another. Champagne allows it only for bottles under 37.5 cl or over 150 cl.1,2
The limit follows from the same-bottle rule: Champagne must be sold in the bottle in which the prise de mousse took place.2 The 2026 proposal refers to bottles under 75 cl or over 150 cl, subject to conditions.3
Transfer is also the basis of the transfer method, where bottle-fermented wine is emptied into a tank under pressure, filtered and rebottled.4 See bottle sizes and isobaric bottling.
