Montagne de Reims

Sub-area of the Champagne AOC

Montagne de Reims is a sub-area of the Champagne AOC south of Reims where Pinot Noir is the most planted grape.1

The area

The Montagne de Reims stretches for nearly 20 miles (about 32 km) and is 3-6 miles (about 5-10 km) wide.2 Pinot Noir is the most common grape.1,2 Across Champagne as a whole, Pinot Noir covers 38% of the vineyard.3

Across Champagne, limestone (chalk, marl and hard limestone) makes up 75% of the outcrops.2

Rules

There is no separate appellation for the sub-area. Its sparkling wines are Champagne and follow the same rules: a yield ceiling of 15,500 kg/ha, at most 102 litres of must per 160 kg of grapes, and at least 15 months from tirage before release.4

Grand Cru status is granted commune by commune in the Champagne specification, not by sub-area; the 17 communes are listed on the Champagne page.4
