De Saint Gall (Union Champagne)
Cooperative of cooperatives · Avize · founded 1966
De Saint Gall is the brand of Union Champagne, a cooperative of cooperatives in Avize founded in 1966 by several Champagne cooperatives.1,2 Today fifteen cooperatives belong to it, and its grapes come only from grand cru and premier cru villages.1
History
Union Champagne was founded in 1966 by several Champagne cooperatives, all of which at the time held grand cru or premier cru classifications. It describes itself as a cooperative of cooperatives and has existed for more than fifty years.1 The company that publishes the De Saint Gall site is Union Champagne, registered in Avize.2
How it works
More than 2,000 people, growers, workers and oenologists, belong to its fifteen member cooperatives. Each cooperative vinifies its own grapes; the wines are then blended at the Avize site by the cellar master.1 The present installations in Avize were inaugurated in 2013.1
Vineyards
The grapes come only from grand cru and premier cru villages in the Côte des Blancs, the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne. The union names Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as its main varieties.1 The site does not publish a total vineyard area.1
Wines
One of the cuvées is called Orpale.1 On labels, cooperative wines carry the code CM; see label codes.3
