Jakostní šumivé víno and sekt

Czech wine law (Act 321/2004) lets quality sparkling wine be labelled "jakostní šumivé víno" or "sekt", and wine from one defined region "sekt s. o."1 Production and labelling otherwise follow EU rules.1

Names on the label

Section 20 of the Act on viticulture and winemaking (321/2004 Sb., current version from 1 July 2025) states that sparkling wine is made and labelled in the ways set by EU rules and by the Act.1 It then defines national names:1,2

NameMain condition
jakostní šumivé víno, or sektmeets EU rules and the quality requirements of the implementing decree
jakostní šumivé víno stanovené oblasti, or sekt s. o.grapes from one wine region; classified by the state inspection
pěstitelský sektquality sparkling wine classified under this name
aromatický sekt s. o.aromatic quality sparkling wine from a defined region, made with only a primary fermentation of the cuvée

The last two rows are taken from the Ministry of Agriculture's consolidated text of 2017; the current text consulted shows the section only up to paragraph 3.2,1 The 2017 text also allows the label of a regional sparkling wine to name the wine region when all grapes come from it, and the label of pěstitelský sekt to name a wine village or vineyard site.2 A dealcoholised product is labelled "odalkoholizované šumivé víno".2

For the use of the word Sekt in German-speaking countries, see Germany and Austria. Method rules such as the traditional method and time on the lees follow the EU texts; see EU labelling.

Regions and vineyards

Czech quality wine comes from two wine regions, Morava and Čechy, each divided into subregions.1 At 31 December 2024 the planted vineyard area was 17 304.4 ha, down from 17 734.9 ha a year earlier.3
