Pierre Gimonnet & Fils
Grower · Cuis · family in Cuis since the 17th century
Pierre Gimonnet & Fils is a family grower in Cuis on the Côte des Blancs, with 29.40 ha of vines: about 13 ha grand cru and 16 ha premier cru.1 The estate supplies all of its own grapes and buys none.1
History
The family has lived in Cuis since the middle of the 17th century, and the estate links its history with the Champagne vineyard from around 1750.2 For a long time the Gimonnets sold their grapes to Champagne houses; the first known labels carry the name Henri Gimonnet, from the early 20th century.2 After the 1929 crisis ended fair grape prices, the family turned to making its own wine, and in the early 1930s Pierre Gimonnet published his first price lists.2
Michel Gimonnet joined from 1955 and introduced plot-by-plot vinification in small stainless steel tanks.2 The estate is now run by his sons Olivier and Didier Gimonnet.2
Vineyard
Until 1950 the vineyard was only in Cuis. The family planted 3 ha on the Montaigu lieu-dit in Chouilly in 1951, added vines in Cramant from 1958, in Oger from 2005 and in Vertus from 2008.1 The total is 29.40 ha, about 13 ha grand cru and 16 ha premier cru, with Chardonnay the main variety.1
Wines
The estate says it buys no grapes and sells in more than 40 countries.1,2 See blanc de blancs, grower champagne and label codes.
