Dom Pérignon
House · Épernay · 1668 (UMC date)
Dom Pérignon is a Champagne house in Épernay that belongs to Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of LVMH; the UMC lists it under MHCS.1,2 The UMC gives 1668 as its date of foundation, which is the year Dom Pierre Pérignon was appointed procurator of Hautvillers Abbey.2,1
What 1668 refers to
The owner group writes that Dom Pierre Pérignon was appointed procurator at the Abbey of Hautvillers in 1668 and worked there for 47 years.1 Historians document that he ran the abbey's vines and cellar from 1668 until his death in 1715 and was known for his skill in blending.4 The idea that he invented champagne is a later legend.4 The year 1668 therefore refers to the monk, not to the founding of a company. See Dom Pérignon: documented and told.
Legend: "Dom Pérignon invented champagne". Documented: he ran the vines and cellar of Hautvillers from 1668 to 1715.4
