Mercier

House · Épernay · founded 1858

Mercier is a Champagne house in Épernay, founded in 1858 by Eugène Mercier; it belongs to Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits division of LVMH, and the UMC lists it under MHCS.1,2

History

According to its owner group, Eugène Mercier was 20 years old when he set up his own champagne house in Épernay in 1858.1 In 1870 he decided to build what the group calls the largest wine cask in the world; the cask was one of the main attractions of the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.1 The group says Mercier used world fairs, the railways and cinema to make its champagne known.1 In 2013 the house adopted new packaging, a new logo and a new signature.1

The house today

Mercier is part of Moët Hennessy.1 The group gives 249 ha of Mercier vines since 1958 and 150,000 cellar visits a year.1 The UMC profile gives no vineyard area for the house itself; the 1,600 ha it shows is a consolidated MHCS figure.2 See Moët & Chandon and Dom Pérignon, also listed under MHCS.4,5

The house's own website could not be opened for this page; the facts above come from the owner group and the UMC. See Champagne houses.
