DO
Spanish · denominación de origen, designation of origin
DO (denominación de origen) is the Spanish designation of origin, for example D.O. Cava.1,2
The Cava DO was consolidated in early 1986 and recognised at EU level in 1989.3 Each DO is run by a Consejo Regulador and follows a pliego de condiciones. At EU level the same wine is a PDO, in Spanish DOP: Cava is registered as PDO 'Cava'.2,4 Not every Spanish sparkling label is a DO: Corpinnat is a brand with its own regulation.5 The regulator reports 37,299 ha of registered Cava vineyards in 2025.6 See Cava and Spain.
