Coiffe

French · foil capsule

The coiffe is the foil capsule covering the cork and neck.1,2

It is part of the habillage, together with the front and back labels.1 Under it sit the bouchon and the muselet with its plaque.3 A neck band label, the collerette, may also be added during packaging.2

To open the bottle, the foil comes off first: see opening. The plaque under the wire cage often shows the producer's name.3,4 In Champagne the cork beneath must bear the appellation name.5
