atm (atmosphere)

English · unit of pressure

The atmosphere (atm) is a pressure unit used in some specifications: Franciacorta Satèn, for example, may have at most 5 atm.1

Examples

  • Satèn from Franciacorta: at most 5 atm; it is sold only as brut.1
  • A Champagne bottle is built to withstand 12 atmospheres.2

EU law states its thresholds in bar: at least 3 bar for sparkling wine and 3.5 bar for quality sparkling wine at 20 °C.3 Another older unit is kg/cm². See pressure and bottle pressure resistance.

Inside a Champagne bottle the second fermentation produces about 6 bar at 20 °C.4,5
