aerated

English · EU label qualifier

In EU law, aerated is the qualifier for sparkling or semi-sparkling wine whose carbon dioxide has been wholly or partly added.1

Two EU categories carry it: aerated sparkling wine (at least 3 bar, only from wine without PDO or PGI) and aerated semi-sparkling wine (1-2.5 bar).2 On the label the wording is 'obtained by adding carbon dioxide' or 'obtained by adding carbon anhydride', in the same type and size as the category, unless the language itself makes the addition clear.3 The OIV equivalent is carbonated wine.4 Process: carbonation. Labelling rules: EU labelling.
