Montlouis-sur-Loire (mousseux, pétillant)
AOC since 1938 · Chenin only
Montlouis-sur-Loire mousseux and pétillant are sparkling wines made only from Chenin in Indre-et-Loire, either by second fermentation in the bottle or by a single fermentation.1 They spend at least 9 months on the lees, according to the June 2026 draft amendment of the cahier des charges.1
Grape
Montlouis-sur-Loire allows a single variety: Chenin.1 The appellation was first recognised by decree on 6 December 1938, under the name "Montlouis".1
Two methods
The sparkling wines may be made in two ways.1
- Second fermentation in bottle, the traditional method used across the Loire.
- Single fermentation (fermentation unique), in which the wine gets its bubbles from one fermentation, the principle behind the ancestral method. Wines made this way must show the vintage on the label.
The single-fermentation option is set out in the June 2026 draft text.1
Rules
| Rule | Second fermentation | Single fermentation |
|---|---|---|
| Base yield | 65 hl/ha | 52 hl/ha |
| Yield ceiling (rendement butoir) | 75 hl/ha | 62 hl/ha |
| Vintage on label | not required | required |

All the sparkling wines spend at least 9 months on lattes, that is, stacked horizontally on their lees. They may be marketed from 30 September of the year after the harvest at the earliest.1 More on this stage: ageing on lees.
About the source
The figures on this page come from the draft amendment of the cahier des charges examined on 18 June 2026 for the national opposition procedure.1 Until it is adopted, details may change. Production volumes for the sparkling wines were not found on an official page.
Nearby Vouvray also makes Chenin sparkling wine but requires 12 months from tirage.2 All Loire sparkling wines are compared on the Touraine page.
