Côte de Sézanne

Sub-area of the Champagne AOC

The Côte de Sézanne is a sub-area of the Champagne AOC around the town of Sézanne, south-west of the Côte des Blancs, planted mainly with Chardonnay.1

The area

The Côte de Sézanne lies around the town of Sézanne, south-west of the Côte des Blancs. Chardonnay is the main grape.1 Across Champagne, Chardonnay covers 31% of the vineyard, level with Meunier.2

Rules

The Côte de Sézanne is not a separate appellation. Its sparkling wines are Champagne and follow the same rules: a yield ceiling of 15,500 kg/ha, at most 102 litres of must per 160 kg of grapes, at least 12 months on the lees and 15 months from tirage before release.3

Grand Cru status is granted commune by commune in the Champagne specification, not by sub-area; the 17 communes are listed on the Champagne page.3
