Nebbiolo

VIVC 8417 · Piedmont

Nebbiolo is a black-berried Italian variety (VIVC 8417) with no confirmed place yet in Italian sparkling appellations: the Alta Langa rules do not name it, and a 2026 proposal to add a Nebbiolo Spumante to Langhe DOC has not been approved.1,2,3

Identity

The Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC) lists Nebbiolo under number 8417, with black berries and Italy as country of origin.1 It records 110 synonyms, among them Chiavenasca, Lampia and Michet.1 VIVC gives no marker-confirmed pedigree for it.1

Status in sparkling wine rules

Only three points are verified here.

  1. Alta Langa. The Alta Langa rules (DM of 13 October 2014) name only Pinot Nero and/or Chardonnay, at 90-100%. The remaining 10% may come from non-aromatic varieties suitable for cultivation in Piedmont; Nebbiolo is not named.2
  2. Langhe DOC, 2026 proposal. A proposal to amend Langhe DOC would add a "Nebbiolo Spumante" type, white and rosato, with at least 85% Nebbiolo. The proposal cites the use of Nebbiolo for sparkling bases. It has not been approved.3
  3. Crémant d'Alsace, 2025 draft. A June 2025 draft of the Crémant d'Alsace rules, published for national opposition, lists Nebbiolo among varieties for rosé under the VIFA scheme (varieties of interest for adaptation), capped at 5% of a holding's plantings and 10% of the blend, and not to be named on labels. Whether this is in force could not be confirmed.4

None of these makes Nebbiolo a standard sparkling variety today. This page will be updated when the Langhe proposal or the Alsace draft is decided.
