quality aromatic sparkling wine

English · EU wine category 6

In EU law, quality aromatic sparkling wine (category 6) is made using only grape must from specific aromatic varieties, with at least 3 bar of pressure, at least 6% vol actual and 10% vol total alcohol.1

The rule names both actual alcohol and total alcoholic strength, the sum of actual and potential alcohol.2 A low actual figure with a higher total leaves room for sugar in the finished wine. Asti DOCG follows this pattern: at least 97% Moscato bianco, developed alcohol at least 6% vol and total at least 11.5% vol, with sweetness from pas dosé to dolce.3 Grape: Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Style: Asti. Other categories: EU categories.
