Furmint is a white variety from Hungary (VIVC 4292) whose parents, confirmed by DNA markers, are Alba Imputotato and Heunisch Weiss.1 The Hungarian rules for sparkling wine (pezsgő) have not yet been checked for this library, so no share or appellation rule is given here.
Identity and pedigree
The Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC) lists Furmint under number 4292, with white berries and Hungary as country of origin.1 Its pedigree confirmed by DNA markers is Alba Imputotato × Heunisch Weiss.1 VIVC records 158 synonyms, among them Arany Furmint, Beregi Furmint, Bieli Moslavac and Debeli Sipon.1
The synonym list mixes Hungarian names such as Arany Furmint and Beregi Furmint with names used in other languages, such as Bieli Moslavac and Debeli Sipon.1
Heunisch Weiss is also the one known parent of Riesling in VIVC.2 VIVC data therefore place Furmint and Riesling in one family line through Heunisch Weiss.
In sparkling wine
Furmint is included in this section because of its place in Hungarian sparkling wine. The official Hungarian texts were not retrieved during research, so this page states no minimum share, method or ageing rule for it.
This page will gain an appellation section once the Hungarian pezsgő rules are checked against the official text.
