Identity and pedigree

The Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC) lists Welschriesling under number 13217, with white berries and Italy as country of origin.1 VIVC records 92 synonyms; Graševina, Olaszrizling, Riesling Italico and Borba Blanca are among them.1

The pedigree confirmed by DNA markers names one parent, Coccalona Nera; the other is unknown.1 Riesling (VIVC prime name Riesling Weiss, number 10077) is a separate entry, with the recorded pedigree unknown × Heunisch Weiss.3 The shared word "Riesling" in the names does not reflect a parent and offspring link in VIVC data.

In sparkling wine

The one verified rule naming this variety comes from Brazil. In the Vale dos Vinhedos espumante, Chardonnay and/or Pinot Noir must make up at least 60%, and Riesling Itálico may complement them.2 Riesling Itálico is matched to Welschriesling here through the VIVC synonym list.1

Austrian and Hungarian sparkling rules were not checked for this variety, so no statement about Sekt Austria or Hungarian pezsgő is made here.
