Identity and pedigree

The Vitis International Variety Catalogue (VIVC) lists Baga under number 885, with black berries and Portugal as country of origin.1 It records 29 synonyms, among them Baga de Louro, Tinta Baya, Poeirinha and Bairrada.1 The last of these is also the name of the Portuguese region whose sparkling wine is described below.

VIVC writes the pedigree confirmed by DNA markers as Arinto do Dão × unknown; the parent field points to the passport Malvasia Fina.1 The same record appears for the white varieties Bical and Fernão Pires.2,3

In sparkling wine

Bairrada sparkling wine is made by bottle fermentation and must stay at least 9 months at the producer's premises from bottling before sale.4 The current Bairrada rules include a list of permitted varieties,5 but that list could not be opened during research, so this page does not confirm the variety's place on it or give any share rule.
