Drappier
Family house · Urville (Aube) · estate founded 1808
Drappier is a family Champagne house in Urville, in the Aube, whose family estate dates from 1808.1,2 Its vineyard is 70% Pinot Noir and is farmed organically, certified by Ecocert.3
History
The house traces vine growing at Urville to Gallo-Roman times and says its cellars were built in 1152 under Saint Bernard of Clairvaux; these are the house's accounts of the site's past, not documents we checked.2 In 1808 François Drappier settled at Urville and began working a few hectares of vines.2
Later dates given by the house: in the early 1930s Georges Collot replanted Pinot Noir; in 1952 André and Micheline Drappier created the Carte d'Or cuvée; in 1957 frost destroyed 95% of the harvest and Meunier was introduced; in 1968 a rosé of 100% Pinot Noir followed. Michel Drappier took over winemaking in 1979, the Charles de Gaulle cuvée was created in 1990, and the eighth generation joined in 2016.2

The family owns 62 ha and works 50 ha more under contract.2 The vineyard lies mainly in Urville, in the Bar-sur-Aube district (see Côte des Bar).3 Its shares are Pinot Noir 70%, Meunier 15%, Chardonnay 9% and old varieties 6%: Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Blanc Vrai and Fromenteau, on 4 ha.3 The whole estate is certified organic by Ecocert.3
