Besserat de Bellefon
House · Épernay · founded 1843
Besserat de Bellefon is a Champagne house in Épernay, founded in Aÿ in 1843 and now part of the Lanson-BCC group.1,2
History
The house says it was founded by the river in Aÿ in 1843.1 A marriage in 1920 gave it its present name, Besserat de Bellefon.1 In 1930 Victor Besserat created the Cuvée des Moines; the house describes a process of its own within the appellation and says the bubbles are 30% smaller than in a standard champagne.1 This is the producer's description, not a measured comparison published by a third party. A rosé version followed in 1972 and an extra brut in 2009.1 In 2024 the house opened a new head office, shop and champagne bar in Épernay.1
Winemaking
According to the house, its cellar master does not allow malolactic fermentation, and the blends use grapes from more than 50 crus, mostly premier and grand cru.1
Ownership
The Union des Maisons de Champagne lists the house in the Lanson-BCC group (see Lanson). It does not publish a vineyard area and gives one vineyard village.2
