Franciacorta vs Champagne
Two bottle-fermented appellations
Franciacorta and Champagne are both made by second fermentation in the bottle with disgorgement; Franciacorta is an Italian DOCG in the province of Brescia, Champagne a French AOC.1,2 Franciacorta needs at least 18 months on the lees, Champagne 15 months from tirage, 12 of them on the lees.1,2

Same principle, longer minimums
Both appellations require the wine to ferment and age in the bottle and to be disgorged.1,6 Franciacorta counts its minimums from tirage to disgorgement: 18 months for the basic wine and 30 for Millesimato. Champagne requires 15 months from tirage for non-vintage and 36 for vintage wine, so the basic minimum is longer in Franciacorta and the vintage minimum longer in Champagne.1,2 Franciacorta Riserva needs 60 months.1 See minimum ageing by appellation.
Grapes
Franciacorta works with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, plus the local Erbamat up to 10%.1 Champagne adds Meunier, which covers 31% of its vineyard.4
Satèn
Satèn is a Franciacorta type of white grapes only, with at least 50% Chardonnay, pressure below 5 atmospheres, tirage sugar capped at 20 g/L and the Brut term only.1 Champagne has no matching legal type. See Satèn.
Scale
The Franciacorta consortium reported 18.9 million bottles sold in 2025, 12.8% of them abroad, from more than 120 wineries.8
