Larmandier-Bernier
Grower · Vertus · founded 1971
Larmandier-Bernier is a family grower in Vertus on the Côte des Blancs, founded in 1971 by Philippe Larmandier and Elisabeth Bernier.1 It farms 19 ha, more than 90% Chardonnay, and says it does not buy grapes.1
History
The estate says vine work has been part of the Larmandier and Bernier family histories since 1765. In 1971 Philippe Larmandier and Elisabeth Bernier, who owned vines in Vertus, founded Champagne Larmandier-Bernier and built the cellar there.1 Their son Pierre returned in 1988 together with Sophie; Arthur joined in 2017 and Georges in 2021.1
Farming
The estate stopped using herbicides in 1992 and has farmed the whole vineyard biodynamically, with indigenous yeasts, since 1999.1 The page consulted does not name a certifying body.1
Vineyard
The 19 ha lie in the grand cru villages of Cramant, Avize and Oger and in the premier cru of Vertus. Vines average about 35 years, and more than 90% is Chardonnay.1 The estate bought 4 ha in Vertus in 2002 and a vineyard in Avize in 2018, and states that it does not buy grapes.1 (A press excerpt on its home page gives 16 ha; the figure here is from the estate's own history page.)2
Cellar
A cellar built in 2010 allows the whole harvest to be aged in wood, and a second cellar for longer ageing was under construction in 2025.1 The estate uses natural fermentation and low dosage, and labels some wines non-dosé.2 See brut nature and grower champagne.
