Chanoine Frères
House · Reims · founded 1730
Chanoine Frères is a Champagne house in Reims that dates its founding to 1730, when Pierre Chanoine set up the business in Épernay.1,2 The Union des Maisons de Champagne lists it in the Lanson-BCC group.2
History
According to the house, Pierre Chanoine founded it in 1730 on the Faubourg de la Folie in Épernay, today avenue de Champagne, and dug a cellar to keep wine in bottles rather than in barrels.1 The house links this to the royal edict of 1728 on wine in bottles and calls itself the second oldest Champagne house; the ranking is its own claim.1 It also writes that it created one of the first printed Champagne labels in 1830.1
The house tells that in 1919 a ship carrying its 1904 vintage sank in the Baltic Sea after striking a mine, and that divers found the wreck in 1999.1 In 1991, under its president Philippe Baijot, the house moved to the allée du Vignoble in Reims and built an above-ground cellar.1 Enguerrand Baijot became president in 2023, and a new range was launched in 2024.1
