Abelé 1757
House · Reims · founded 1757
Abelé 1757 is a Champagne house in Reims that dates its origin to 1757.1,2 The Union des Maisons de Champagne lists it in the CVNF group.1
History
According to the house, Théodore Vander Veken founded the business in 1757, and the house calls itself the fifth oldest Champagne house; the ranking is its own claim.2 The house writes that Antoine de Muller, cellar master at Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin, devised the riddling table and in 1842 took over the family business, then called Muller-VanderVeken.2 His daughter married François Abelé, and their son Henri Abelé took over in 1876 and gave the house his name.2
The house credits Henri Abelé with introducing disgorging on ice in 1884.2 These attributions come from the house's own history page. In 1920, the house writes, Henri Abelé paid for the restoration of the Smiling Angel statue of Reims Cathedral, damaged by fire in 1914.2 In 1939 the Abelé sons sold the family business.2
