Museleteuse

French · caging machine

A museleteuse is the automated pneumatic machine that fits the wire cage.1

It works at the end of the line, after dégorgement, dosage by the doseuse and corking.2,1 The cage, the muselet, holds the bouchon against the pressure.1

Before machines and wire cages, string (ficelle) was tied by hand over corks.3 The first wire cages were made around 1880.3 On top of the cork, under the wire, sits a metal cap, the plaque de muselet, often showing the producer's name.1,4 See corking.
