Tasmania
The island state's industry body, Wine Tasmania, reports that 41% of all 2026 Tasmanian wine was sparkling, up from 38% in 2024.1,2 Its sparkling wine is described as made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, the same three varieties that dominate Champagne.2,3
| Measure | 2024 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Grapes processed | 16,805 t | 11,163 t |
| Wine produced | about 1,214,000 cases | 806,000 cases |
| Sparkling share | 38% | 41% |
Figures from the Wine Tasmania vintage reports.2,1 The 2026 bearing vineyard area was about 2,451 ha.1 Wine Australia estimated the 2026 crush slightly higher, at 11,219 t.1
The smaller 2026 crush and the higher sparkling share both come from the same report; the report does not split sparkling volume in tonnes.

Same grapes as the English PDOs
The three Tasmanian sparkling varieties are also among the six permitted for English Quality Sparkling Wine, and they are the principal varieties of the Sussex PDO.4,5 In both cases the rules come from a legal specification; in Tasmania the variety list is a description in the industry report, not a rule.2
