Mumm

House · Reims · founded 1827

Mumm (G.H. Mumm & Cie) is a Champagne house in Reims that dates its founding to 1827, when the Mumm wine family of Cologne set up a Reims branch.1,2 The house gives nearly 218 ha of own vines, 160 ha of them grand cru.1

History

Peter Arnold Mumm started a wine business in Cologne in 1761. In 1827 the family set up a Reims branch with a local representative, G. Heuser; the house treats this as its founding.1 In 1840 it bought its first plots in Verzenay and installed a press there, which the house says is still in use.1 In 1852 Georges Hermann Mumm took over and the firm became G.H. Mumm et Cie.1

The house gives two dates for Cordon Rouge: first released in 1875, with the red ribbon on the neck added in 1876.1 Sales grew from half a million bottles in 1879 to three million in 1913.1 René Lalou joined the board in 1920; the Cuvée René Lalou was made in nine vintages between 1966 and 1985.1 The rose by Léonard Foujita used on the rosé dates from 1957.1

The house gives nearly 218 ha of own vines, including 160 ha of grand cru.1 The Union des Maisons de Champagne lists Pernod Ricard as the group and vineyards in 20 villages.2 Perrier-Jouët belongs to the same group.4
