de Castellane

House · Épernay · founded 1895

de Castellane is a Champagne house in Épernay, founded in 1895 by Vicomte Florens de Castellane and part of the Laurent-Perrier group since 1999.1

History

The house says Vicomte Florens de Castellane founded it in Épernay in 1895 and chose for its label the Saint Andrew's cross, after the standard of the oldest regiment of Champagne.1 In 1899 his cousin Boni de Castellane promoted the brand in Paris, and in 1902 the house commissioned its first advertisement from Leonetto Cappiello.1

Ownership

In 1907 the Union Champenoise, led by Fernand Mérand, bought the house and kept the brand. Alexandre Mérand, Fernand's son, bought it back in 1936. After his early death, his daughter Claude Mérand took over in 1970 with her husband Bernard de Nonancourt, head of Laurent-Perrier. In 1999 de Castellane joined the Laurent-Perrier group and stayed within the family.1 See Laurent-Perrier.

UMC profile

The UMC lists the group as Laurent-Perrier, vineyards in 4 villages with no published area (NC), and four brands: De Castellane, Beaumet, Jeanmaire and Oudinot.2 See grande marque and Champagne houses.
