Jacob Schram

In 1862 Jacob Schram bought a property of more than 200 acres on Mount Diamond from the government and began planting vineyards on the Napa hillsides.1 According to the estate, Chinese labourers dug Napa's first hillside caves there around 1870, and work on a second set of cellar tunnels began in 1881.1 The writer Robert Louis Stevenson visited in 1880 and described the place in 'The Silverado Squatters'.1 The vineyard covered 50 acres in 1880 and 100 acres in 1890.1

The Davies family

In 1965 Jack and Jamie Davies bought the 200-acre property and made their first bottling.1 In 1972 a Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs 1969 was served at the state dinner given by President Nixon for Premier Zhou Enlai in Beijing.1 In 1985 the company bought the 20-acre McEachran Winery estate.1
