History

The producer notes that the Nyetimber estate was named in the Domesday Book in 1086, and that its first vines were planted in 1988, almost 902 years later.1 In 2006 Eric Heerema became the owner, and in 2007 Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrix joined as winemakers.1

Vineyards

The vines are spread across several separate sites on the greensand and chalk soils of Sussex, Hampshire and Kent.1 The producer does not publish the total area or the number of sites on its history page.

Context

The wider story of English sparkling wine is told on the United Kingdom page. Sparkling wines from these counties can be sold under the English designation, and the estate's home county also has its own Sussex designation.2,3 Another Sussex producer in this section is Ridgeview, planted in 1995.4
