What the series shows
The table published by the Union des Maisons de Champagne gives bottles shipped in France and abroad for every year since 1947, from CIVC data; figures for 1844 to 1945 come from a 1951 book by Georges Chappaz and are given by season, so they are not charted.1 Shipments rose from 21.7 million bottles in 1947 to 102.2 million in 1970 and 327.0 million in 1999, then fell to 253.2 million in 2000.1 The highest total in the series is 338.7 million in 2007.1
France and export
The French market peaked at 190.4 million bottles in 1999; it fell from 185.1 million in 2010 to 114.1 million in 2025.1 Shipments abroad first exceeded those in France in 2018: 153.8 against 147.0 million.1 The Comité Champagne confirmed in 2020 that exports had been above French sales for a second year in a row.3 The highest export figure is 187.2 million bottles in 2022.1
