Moutard

House · Buxeuil · founded 1927

Moutard is a family Champagne house in Buxeuil in the Côte des Bar (Aube); the Union des Maisons de Champagne gives 1927 as its founding year and 22 ha of own vineyard.1 The family also runs a distillery and an estate in Chablis.2

History

The family writes that its ancestors grew vines on the slopes of Buxeuil from 1642.3 It ties 1927 to two events: the law of 22 July 1927 that placed the Aube vineyards within the Champagne appellation area, and the first Champagne appellation wines made that year by François Diligent from 1.5 ha of vines.3 François Diligent founded a trading business in 1941, and his daughter Josette married Lucien Moutard in 1958.3

According to the house, Lucien Moutard planted a 10-are plot of Arbane in 1952, a variety that has almost disappeared from Champagne.3 In 1982 François Moutard revived the trading business, then with 40% of wine from its own vines and 60% from purchases in the Côte des Bar.3 The Moutard-Diligent distillery was founded in 1988, and in 2004 the family bought an estate in Chablis and the Grand Auxerrois.3

Today

The house gives 22.5 ha of its own vines and 60 ha under purchase contracts in the Côte des Bar; the UMC gives 22 ha.2,1 The UMC profile gives the address rue des Ponts in Buxeuil and no group.1 See also marc.
